about

Luke Shaw and Tuha Tuimaka share a particular educational lineage, attending the same swamp-land highschool art classes a year apart, and then moving slowly but surely through the historical anomaly that is the Ilam School of Fine Arts at the University of Canterbury. ‘Lil’ Luke and ‘Your Boy’ Tuha first played together at the end of the 2017 academic year, in the design studio, as kind of a joke. Luke Shaw had already abandoned 6-string proficiency and buried himself in feedback, while Tuha was a member of up-and-coming five piece hip-hop outfit, The Caffeinated Collective.

As such their decision to play together at school was kinda weird. However their improvised performance, somewhat surprisingly to everyone there (I think), quickly transcended the expected comedy and sounded weirdly, urgh, good.

And so, early the following year, in May of 2018, I convinced them to give it another whirl in front of the famous Ilam Press Records TEAC 4-track reel-to-reel.

And this is what we got. Unedited, and even, I believe, in the order they were done?

As usual I took the machine home and let the tapes marinate for a bit. When I eventually got around to taking a listen again I dug what I was hearing. My girlfriend said it sounded like Steely Dan and My Bloody Valentine accidentally took drugs together. And that she—also surprised—liked it. We found ourselves listening to it at home and thought it’d make a great dinner party album.

So here we have it, the first IPR ‘Yacht Rock’ record. But a twisted kinda yacht rock whereby our wealthy leisure boaters must finally confront the inevitability of global warming, unsustainable population growth, and the end of their beloved free market capitalism.
This one’s for them.

Happy sailing ya bastards.
